It was December 1st, 2022. The Aces arrived at our video, animation and design headquarters, Studio A, sensing something in the air.
Everyone knew Germany would be playing Costa Rica in the World Cup, but there was something different about this sporting event. Little did we know, we were about to get a blog post out of it.
Let’s take a look back at the events from the Germany – Costa Rica World Cup game that lead to “The Tattoo.”
It all started with a bet.
Soccer, part of the World Cup or not, is serious business at Akullian Creative.
Given the fact that Sophia is German, and her background in soccer at UAlbany, she is a fan of the German soccer team. Makes perfect sense.
Noah is a Costa Rica fan because they are playing Germany. If there’s a sporting event taking place in the office, does it count if there’s no conflict?
No, it doesn’t.
In an attempt to stir the pot, Noah grabbed the closest spoon and did just that: started rooting for the Costa Rican soccer team.
All of this makes for a classic, good old fashioned bet.
Stop me when you’ve heard this one before: if (insert outcome that no one in the room has control over) happens, you have to get a tattoo.
I’ll stop now.
Studies have shown that real tattoos are not only expensive, but also real. In an effort to save time and money, we’ve turned to Inkbox to supply temporary tattoos that will provide the public humiliation we are looking to inflict upon each other.
The Aces went through all the emotions watching this game, take a look for yourself.
Things are quiet as Germany takes an expected 1-0 lead.
Costa Rica ties the game at 1-1 early on in the second half.
Costa Rica takes a 2-1 lead, which Noah is excited about.
In the end, Germany wins the game 4-2. Sophia held up her end of the bet, meaning it was time to go tattoo shopping, but not for her…
Sophia celebrated the win, right?
Unfortunately, Sophia wins the bet, but it wasn’t without sacrifice. Japan’s 2-1 victory over Spain eliminated Germany, ending their World Cup journey in the group stage.
As a consolation, Sophia will get to choose the tattoo for Noah. There will be more World Cups, but the chance to put a tattoo on a co-worker doesn’t happen every four years (or maybe it does, I guess we’ll have to wait and see if this happens again).
Our friends at Inkbox sent us the work of art you see below. Like all good tattoos, you had to have been there to understand what it is. Otherwise, you need a smart, funny, good-looking writer to tell you.
Luckily for you, I’m still on the clock.
The tattoo is a snake, coming from the “Noah the Boa” moniker given to Noah from Rich, which it reads at the top. The snake is in the shape of a pretzel because pretzels are German.
The bottom of the tattoo is more complicated to understand.
What do you like on your pizza? Pineapple? Classic pepperoni? How about corn?
Sophia likes corn on her pizza, something we learned from our pizza orders that take place from time to time at Studio A. Although we have tried, we have yet to see this request met by local eateries.
Noah continues to be flabbergasted by someone requesting corn on a pizza, so the tattoo reads in German: “I like corn on my pizza.”
Enjoy some photos of the reveal:
We want to thank the Inkbox team for helping us out. The next time you have a tattoo bet with your co-workers, you know where to turn.
